| SACRIFICIAL EAR, 2009 In his short essay, Sacrificial Mutilation and the Severed Ear of Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Bataille draws a connection between the aforementioned artist’s obsession with the Sun and his subsequent act of auto-mutilation. In this installation, a tripod supports a high voltage halogen bulb that points at a reflective gold disc. The result is a kind of ‘surrogate sun’ that from certain angles is blinding. The installation then, also stands as an open invitation to the audience: to tempt the edge of madness, to recognize the moment-to-moment decisions which separate us from madness. In this way, it can be looked at as an object of art or it can be stared at as an object of obsession. |
